The power of motherhood

What is the greatest power in the world? The power of motherhood. It is the mother who shapes child’s perception of the world and attitude towards life. It is the mother who has the most special, the strongest tie with the child.

However, sometimes that tie is weaker. There are different reasons, the problem may lie in mother’s or child’s behaviour. It depends from both mother and child how this influence will shape child’s life. The cinema likes hard and controversial topics. That is why much more movies depict stories about difficulties of this relations rather than presenting everyday life of loving family. I found 3 movies dealing with this topic: 3 stories, 3 kinds of relations, 3 problems to be considered. 3 different mothers and 3 different children.

“We need to talk about Kevin”(2011), “Real women have curves”(2002) and “Girl in progress”(2012) show, how important is mother-child relation and present 3 different manners in which child’s life is influenced by the parent. Although the movies may seem different at first sight, there is something that connects them: there are not happy stories depicted there. This films show how that special tie can be destroyed and even never built. It is not a gap generation that is the problem, the cause lies in the psychology. The child may feel unwanted (“We need to talk about Kevin”), neglected (“Girl in Progress”) and oppressed by mother’s forceful personality ("Real women have cuves").

In the following posts I will try to analyse this motives in the movies listed above.
